Spiraling Stairways Challenge Guidelines
All challenges must comply by the Submission Rules in addition to the following guidelines.
General:
1) Every story submitted must be within the set word count limits for that particular challenge.
2) Every story submitted must fit the prompt and theme of every challenge in the following ways:
a) The prompt must be at least mentioned in the story (similar wordings are fine, i.e. 'guilty pleasure' instead of 'guilty pleasures').
b) The story must be based on the theme (as in, it must be implied)
3) All stories must be submitted before the deadline given. We will try our best to validate all stories before 11:59 PM of that day. All times for the deadline are of the US Eastern timezone. For a time zone converter, please see this page.
4) Stories are only allowed to be submitted once. Stories from previous challenges cannot be moved into the challenge category. Likewise, stories written before the challenge is announced cannot be submitted for the challenge.
5) Only one story per author per challlenge may win an award.
6) You may only submit up to TWO stories per challenge. Though this is true, you MAY NOT submit more than one story for one prompt. Similarly, you may not have two or more prompts in one story and submit it for both prompts.
7) Please state the prompt the story was written for in the story's SUMMARY.
8) If there are additional guidelines for specific challenges, all must be followed in order to submit a story for that challenge.
9) All stories submitted must be within the correct CATEGORY for that specific challenge. The categories for the Harry Potter fandom can be found under the main category of "Duels". The categories for original fiction can be found under "Orignal Compositions > Challenges."
Failure to adhere to these guidelines will cause any violating stories submitted for that particular challenge to be disqualified.
Judging:
All stories entered into challenges will be judged. At the present time, all willing staff vote on all entries for first, second, and third place. They are not allowed to vote for their own entries.
While judging, the following things are taken into consideration (in no order of importance):
- Whether the story in question had proper grammar/spelling (we suggest getting a beta reader to help with this)
- Whether all rules for the challenge were followed
- How well the story fit the prompt
- How well the story fit the theme
- Creativity/originality
- Story flow
- Effort shown
Judges try their best to be objective, and please do not try to persuade them to vote for any of your entries, for if you do, you will be disqualified. To help keep this to a minimum, we do not tell who judged a particular challenge, and please do not ask.
Good luck to everyone who participates in the coming challenges!
